Congressman Smith Comments on UN Weapons Inspections

Washington, Sep 18, 2002 - Congressman Smith issued the following statement on UN weapons inspections:

“Iraq’s offer to allow the return of UN weapons inspections should be met with skepticism. These are the same delay tactics Iraq has used before.

“Disarmament is the objective, not inspections. Inspections, as they have been conducted in the past, offer us no assurances that chemical weapons, biological weapons, and possibly weapons of mass destruction produced by Iraq no longer exist. The president called for Iraq to comply with all the UN sanctions, which included the removal or destruction of those weapons and so far they haven’t done it.”
