Rep. Smith: A Shameful Abuse of Judicial Authority

May 18, 2004 - Rep. Smith today released the following statement regarding same-sex marriage:
“Same-sex marriage has had no foundation in law or policy for more than 200 years.
“It exists now because a Massachusetts court redefined marriage and ordered the state legislature to accept it, which is a shameful abuse of judicial authority."
“Unelected and self-appointed super-legislators have no place in our nation’s court rooms. We cannot have fair and impartial justice with judges determined to place personal philosophy, ideology and politics before the law.”
