Smith Applauds San Antonio's Clear Channel
Feb 26, 2004
Press Release
Congressman Smith issued the following statement regarding Clear Channel Communications suspending Howard Stern:
I applaud Clear Channel Communications for its suspension of Howard Sterns radio program. For too long he has ridiculed our nations decency laws for profit.
It has become apparent that radio and television performers will accept a small fine for offensive and crude behavior in return for the media attention it creates.
I look forward to other media companies following Clear Channels example. They should adopt tough decency standards to govern all their programming to protect their listeners and children from indecent material.
Rep. Smith and Rep. Doug Ose introduced The Clean Airwaves Act (H.R. 3687), which prohibits eight profane words from being broadcast over America's airwaves.
